Looking over the first week back since our city reopened on April 12th 2021, it has been fantastic to see Chelmsford full of life with a bustling High Street once again.
Here at the BID we have been monitoring footfall and are pleased to see that consumer confidence is there, with reported figures at 226,000 visitors during that first week. These are the kind of stats we would expect over the Christmas period and a busy week in Chelmsford is normally placed at around 200,000. Although we do expect these numbers to drop down slightly once the initial excitement of restrictions lifting, we are delighted to see the buzz back in our city!
As expected, we saw queues outside retailers such as Primark, H & M and of course Debenhams, where customers were keen to make the most of the huge discounts ahead of, sadly, the store closure. Pre-empting the queues at Debenhams, the BID were pleased to support the store by providing some crowd barriers to help the flow of people on the High Street.
It was also great to see the reopening of lots of our hospitality venues and there was certainly an appetite from so many people to enjoy that first ice cold pint!
Looking forward, we are counting down to 17th May where lots more restaurants and bars are opening as well.
From everyone here at One Chelmsford... WELCOME BACK!
